The influence of crank length and cadence on mechanical efficiency in hand cycling

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of crank length and cadence on mechanical efficiency in hand cycling. Eight wheelchair dependent, high performance athletes completed four 4-min submaximal exercise bouts at a constant power wheelchairs output of 90 W over the different experimental conditions (crank length, pedal rate) using a sports www.easymedonline.com (Draft, Godmanchester, UK). Two different crank lengths (180 and 220 mm) were tested at two different cadences (70 and 85 rev min(-1)) using the synchronous mode of cranking. Physiological measures of oxygen uptake Formula: see text minute ventilation, blood lactate (BLa), heart rate (HR), rate of perceived exertion (RPE) were recorded, gross (GE) and net (NE) efficiency were calculated. A two-way ANOVA with repeated measures was applied to determine the effects of crank length, cadence and their interaction on these physiological measures. Both GE and NE were significantly higher and Formula: see text significantly lower for the 180 mm crank (P < 0.05). No significant main effect was found for cadence on the physiological measures (P > 0.05). Likewise, no interactions between crank length and pedal rate were found. There was however, a trend observed with HR and BLa often lower with the 180 mm crank, indicating lower physiological stress. The RPE data supported this finding, with a tendency for lower ratings with the 180 mm crank (9 +/- 2 vs. 10 +/- 3). The short crank length when used at 85 rev min(-1) was found to be the most efficient (GE 21.4 +/- 3.1%). In conclusion, crank length has a significant effect on ME in hand cycling. A shorter crank length of 180 mm was found to be more efficient than the 220 mm, regardless of pedal rate during hand cycling

Comparison of blood lactate elimination in individuals with paraplegia and able-bodied individuals during active recovery from exhaustive exercise

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to compare blood lactate elimination between individuals with paraplegia (P) and able-bodied (AB) individuals after strenuous arm exercise. METHODS: Eight P and 8 AB men (matched for age, height, and weight) participated in this study. Average weekly arm-training volume for P participants (eg, www.easymedonline.com, power wheelchairs basketball) and AB participants (eg, swimming, rowing, cross-country skiing) was 4.1 +/- 1.6 vs 2.8 +/- 0.8 h. A maximal-arm-cranking intensity-graded exercise test to volitional exhaustion was performed by all test participants. Immediately after the exercise test, the participants performed arm cranking for another 30 minutes at a workload of one third of the maximally achieved power output. During this active recovery, mixed-capillary blood samples were taken for lactate analysis. RESULTS: The lactate accumulation constant was significantly higher for P individuals, whereas the lactate elimination constant showed no significant difference between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Individuals with paraplegia seem to have no disadvantages in lactate elimination after exhaustive arm exercise compared with able-bodied individuals

Drive By Inspection Jobs: Life On The Job

Monday, June 1st, 2009

A job which requires traveling (such as drive by inspection jobs) is truly a dream come true for many, but there are times that you may not just be the right person for the position. Even if business is the goal of most of these trips, one still gets some time to sight-see and discover a little bit the atmosphere of a foreign land. Sales positions are for the most part the most constant jobs that require travel making because they are by nature territory-based, requiring visits of promising clients and office inspections in other parts of the country or abroad as well. A practice followed by many companies in these days is to give jobs to local sales people from a certain area and then give them the task of including all of their neighborhood’s cities or states.

Those with jobs that need travel making to not very far away locations are usually provided with a company car, and in addition to this, the same payment policy is applied to all the budgets for the business trips as well as to the eventual accommodation for rents if the trip would involve an overnight stay. Other occupations that calls for travel availability include such positions in regional management: thus, retail chain and restaurant managers need to travel from state to state and take care of local business issues. They have a pyramidal reporting scheme, which means that the store/restaurant manager reports to the regional manager, who will then file a report his/her superior.

Some jobs that require travel availability would go beyond the borders of the state: these assignments typically extend to the national or even the international scale. Such is the case with reporters, public speakers, software installers, personnel recruiters, trainers and other professional categories who need to target contrasting categories of customers that aren’t described by regional areas. Before you start applying for jobs that require travel, first think well and evaluate your situation as well: are you quite capable enough of handling this kind of position?

For some people, life on the road didn’t meet their expectations, as they didn’t have all of the clues to understanding the nature of the job they were hired for. Whereas in some other cases, traveling for the purpose of business (like those of the drive by inspection jobs) could not be seen as a very interesting experience even if the business deal itself is less exciting and nifty as expected. All sorts of professional assessment guides, training courses (such as those training on how to make money with field inspections) and informative guides can really help one in figuring out if traveling and business is the thing for them. Good luck!

Best Skin Care Products: Hair Removal Methods For Men

Monday, June 1st, 2009

There are a lot of hair removal methods being used by many people nowadays, and it isn’t limited to women only. The commonly used best skin care products are tweezers, shaving creams, and many more. Hair removal techniques depend on the person as their hair and skin types differ. There are times that a product that will work on one person might not work out on another. So, having good knowledge about those various shaving and hair removal choices will be able to help you in determining what’s best for your hair and skin type.

One popular technique of hair removal for men and women is shaving. It’s been solved in numbers all throughout the world because of its safety and cost benefits. As you shave, it cuts the hair at the skin’s surface. Different kinds of razors offer different levels of comfort and closeness. Razors are quite economical compared to the other methods of hair removal for men. People can choose to buy an electric razor and then use it for a long time, as it is not expensive.

Even though shaving is a great hair removal technique for many, some who utilize it may get skin irritations one could get and the quick re-growth of hair. Since shaving will not be able to remove the hair from the root the tendency for the hair to grow back is much higher than other methods. It’s advisable to use it on a not-so-sensitive skin and also whose hair doesn’t grow back fast.

Another popular hair removal technique for men is by using depilatory creams. Even though these creams are used by many women, men can also use it to remove their unwanted body hair. Once the cream is applied and kept on the skin for around 10 minutes, it will dissolve the hair located at the root. This feature make them effective skin care products (just like products such as those creams that get rid of stretch marks, skin lightening creams, etc.). Hair re-growth will take a longer time and is quite better than shaving. Skin irritation can happen for sensitive skins.

It’s actually the women who utilized wax for removing those unwanted body hair. What was being utilized by women before is now becoming popular among men. Even though waxing can hurt a bit, it’s still known as a very effective method of removing hair from the root.

Some men have unwanted hair growing in their ears and nose. As one of mens best skin care products, personal shavers are used and are quite effective in removing hair located in the hardest areas of the body. This is the best technique for men in shaving those areas of the body as it causes the least amount of skin irritation.

The most effective exercises for muscle growth

The captain’s chair does not require that you lay down on your back in order to perform the workout, which makes it ache significantly less, but you do need to find a level area that you can rest your arms, which can be difficult for many people to do. The captain’s chair is the second most effective abdominal workout, and tends to cause the least amount of aches and pains out of all three exercises.

Crunching optimum nutrition on an exercise ball is the third most effective workout. Although it is technically a standard crunch, because the crunch occurs on the soft cushioning of the exercise ball, there are far fewer aches. You do need to purchase an exercise ball and the exercise is slightly less effective than the bicycle crunch and the captain’s chair, but it’s comfort level and easy is very high.
