Using carbon dating, the oldest layer has been dated to the 8th-6th many years BC, about the time that Pompeii was founded. A wall fresco which depicted Priapus, the ancient god of sex and fertility, with his extremely enlarged penis, was covered with plaster, even the older reproduction below was locked away “out of prudishness” and only opened on request and only rediscovered in 1998 due to rainfall. Many such discoveries were re-buried in this way because of a clash of cultures. A large number of artifacts from Pompeii are preserved in the Naples National Archaeological Museum.
